CHINATOWN YOUTH CENTER – FINAL CONCERT REVIEW

This week, a local landmark played its final concert in Fresno, California. A lineup of 7 acts consisting of self-made musicians starting out the early years of their bands rang out into the night one last time at one of their favorite underground venues.

The turnout was almost too large to fit inside the building but in-between sets, they would always pour out into the streets, giving this side of Fresno its very own music scene. All sub-genres of rock were represented from electronic to punk, full of diversity and all welcomed for their unique differences.

The crowd reaction also differed throughout each performance. Some enjoyed the slow grooves of Heavenly Body‘s new wave inspired guitar riffs while others went so far as to mosh intensely to the hard rock composition of The Millennials.

Nothing was discouraged and experimentation is what most of these bands were founded on. It was CYC where they would project their ideas as an outlet. The audience was always open minded since they shared the same love of music. There wasn’t any booing or conflict, because everyone was bonded as a community, coming time and time again to the venue they could depend on.

Now that CYC has had its grand finale, all that’s left is the memories of those who saw it in its heyday. It doesn’t matter if it wasn’t the most luxurious in appearance. In some ways that’s what made the Chinatown Youth Center a special place. No major corporation behind it. Just a cool place to hang out and listen to tunes for the night.
