The infamous Grand Theft Auto franchise has made controversial headlines for their explicit content, however there’s a more underrated contribution that often goes unnoticed.
The legendary soundtracks from each sequel including San Andreas and Vice City have brought the music of the respective decades they take place into a new generation of gamers.
From 80’s pop to 90’s rap, Rockstar selected a wide range of songs to represent the themes in each installment. Especially, when it came to rock and metal in all of its forms.
San Andreas had two radio stations dedicated to rock. K-DST with Axl Rose at the helm as a cynical commentator introduces the classic rock track list from Heart to Rod Stewart. On the other hand, Radio-X included alternative rock from the time period of the game.
Soft rock came in full force in the the latest sequel with GTA V.
Many speculate how the team decides which bands and songs qualify when compiling an entire soundtrack, more extensive than most movies, to an already enduring game series. Some have noticed the two missing giants in the franchise are Metallica and Van Halen, the most notable ones as everyone they influenced made the list instead. Licensing was an obvious obstacle and so many classics have continue to be added.
Despite their age, the team has no problem keeping up with the modern era and many wonder what’s in store for their next installment.
