ANTHRAX BELTED OUT THEIR CROWN JEWEL 29 YEARS AGO

Anthrax: Among The Living (1986)

Anthrax struck a career changing deal with Megaforce Records after they had recently signed Metallica for their debut album, but that was only the beginning for the New York thrashers.

The group had a strong upbringing just like the local competition (Slayer, Exodus etc.) who were trying to establish themselves in the thrash metal scene, however it ended in a line-up change that would trigger a string of success for the band.

The induction of Joey Belladonna sparked a more critically-acclaimed response from fans and critics alike. Spreading The Disease generated the launch of Anthrax‘s signature tone, although it would be their next release that took their dark and heavy roots to the extreme.

Among The Living was the turning point in the band’s career where their capacity seemed limitless. The material grew compatible alongside the members of The Big Four. Offering a more speed metal influenced sound, Anthrax forged a noticeably mature record with an increasingly fierce and impacting delivery.

Songs such as the title track and I Am The Law were a groundbreaking step forward for the group as they had pushed themselves into a new realm. The material in its entirety are equipped with chant-worthy lyrics, tempo changing intensity and guaranteed a remarkable live performance.

This LP also introduced the humorous side of the band because of its wacky lyrics. While it contrasts with their striking, pedal to the medal genre, this trait made them stand out as a comic relief amidst the seriousness of thrash.

Anthrax started gaining traction with their following records State Of Euphoria and Persistence Of Time, however it all developed with the face-melting power of Among The Living.
