Since the announcement of Deep Purple‘s long awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, fans and band members alike observed a few missing names from the guest list.
Original Bassist and co-founder of DP, Nick Simper made a statement recently concerning the topic at hand:
“Yes, it is a little strange that I am only only one from Marks I, II and III being left out, but I shan’t lose any sleep over this. It’s not as if I need to be given this award to know what we did in Deep Purple made an impact. And I’m sure it wasn’t a decision that came from the band.”
The R&RHOF has gotten its share of criticism over the years due to the number of notable bands who continue to be excluded from it.
Ian Gillen didn’t hold back on his opinion to Classic Rock, revealing his brutally honest interpretation of the group’s 22 year snub:
“I have no respect for them, They’re the kind of people that, having seen A Hard Day’s Night, decided that the Monkees would be America’s equivalent to the Beatles. They’ve no idea what goes on in the big, wide world outside of their self-arbitrating surroundings.”
Gillen is referring to the alarming tally of bands who haven’t made their roster to this day:
Yes, Judas Priest, Ted Nugent, The Doobie Brothers, Electric Light Orchestra, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Def Leppard, Motley Crue and many, many others.
The judges in charge of the R&RHOF are constantly being switched out and replaced with various individuals, however the pattern that ensues is the miss election of candidates. Pop and rap stars repeatedly make the ballet, while decade defining albums of previous artists collect dust.
The media has tried to bury Metal as a genre since its breakthrough in the early 80’s. It has been overlooked and not recognized as a technical display of musicianship and a timeless collection of material. Those in the R&RHOF who have the power to determine who’s eligible for induction are influenced by this misconception.
Therefore, it’s best to remember the impact of the music in its heyday and the body of work that stands for itself. The fans know who deserves the proper credit and the Hall of Fame doesn’t have to be the source that confirms something that everybody knows already.
